Monteith Ranch

Monteith Ranch is one of the oldest and largest continuously family-owned ranches in Central Texas. Nestled in Bell County just west of Salado, the ranch has earned a lasting reputation for exceptional cattle operations, premier hunting, and a legacy built on tradition, stewardship, and resilience.

The story began in 1905, when Arthur MacArthur Monteith of Belton purchased the original 300 acres and established a modest cattle ranch. Over the years, Arthur and his wife, Hitie, expanded the land by another 700 acres and passed it to their son, Walter Embree Monteith.

Walter—who served as Mayor of Houston from 1928 to 1933—left his own mark on the ranch. He introduced the iconic “-V-” brand, believed to honor his wife, Vera, and acquired an additional 1,330 acres, bringing the total to 2,330 acres.

Tragedy struck in 1941 when their only son, Walter Morey Monteith, died unexpectedly in a plane crash. Upon Walter and Vera’s passing in 1953, the ranch was entrusted to their niece and nephew, Carolyn Monteith Clarke and Edgar Monteith.

Carolyn and Edgar ushered in a period of growth and diversification. They acquired the neighboring Willingham Tract, expanding the ranch beyond 3,500 acres. They refined the cattle herd and began to open the land to friends and clients for deer and bird hunting—planting the seeds of what would become one of Central Texas’s most respected game operations.

Today, Monteith Ranch is managed by the next generation—Edgar and Carolyn’s children and grandchildren—who continue to honor the land and legacy. With 1,200 acres under game fencing, the ranch now supports thriving populations of exotic species like Axis, Blackbuck, Red Stag, and Père David. A structured protein-feeding program supports wildlife health, while guided hunts for deer and hogs help maintain ecological balance.

From its deep historical roots to its modern-day stewardship, Monteith Ranch stands as a living testament to the values of land, legacy, and family—still going strong in the heart of Central Texas.
