Our Story

Monteith Ranch is one of the oldest and largest family owned and operated ranches in Central Texas. It’s reputation as a premier Texas ranch is founded in its rich family history, exceptional hunting and cattle operations, and ideal location in Bell County.

Founded in 1905, Arthur MacArthur Monteith purchased the first 300 acres of Monteith Ranch as a small cattle ranch, just six miles west of Salado, Texas. After accumulating another 700 acres during his lifetime, he and his wife, Hitie, passed the ranch to their son, Walter Embree Monteith.

Walter, who served as Mayor of Houston from 1928-1933, was responsible for establishing the ranch’s ‘-V-‘ brand, presumably after his wife, Vera. Walter also purchased an additional 1,330 acres, bringing the ranch’s total acreage to 2,330.

Walter and Vera’s only child, Walter Morey Monteith, was set to inherit the land from his parents when he unexpectedly died in a plane crash in 1941. So, upon the couple’s passing in 1953, they conveyed the ranch to their niece and nephew, Carolyn Monteith Clarke and Edgar Monteith.

Under Carolyn and Edgar’s ownership, the ranch continued to grow and prosper. They acquired the adjoining Willingham Tract, increasing the ranch's total acreage to more than 3,500. Furthermore, they improved the cattle herd, and began using the land for deer and bird hunting.

Today, the ranch is owned and operated by Edgar and Carolyn’s children and grandchildren. Under their stewardship, the Monteith Ranch has continued to build upon its great hunting operation by setting up 1,200 acres of game fencing, introducing exotic animals, and developing a protein-feeding regimen. As with most Texas ranches, the ranch has had an influx of wild hogs the past two decades; thus, commercial hunts have been established to keep the population in check.

Rich history, exemplary hunting and cattle operations, and ideal location between Austin and Waco continue to make the Monteith Ranch a foremost ranch of Central Texas.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

1.) What does the Hunter fee include?

Bunk style lodging (including showers), guide fees, cleaning and quartering of your kill, meals Friday evening thru Sunday morning, and ice for your coolers.

2.) Are there any hidden fees?

There are NO hidden fees. The only thing not included is gratuity, and the cost of your hunting license and hunter education (if applicable).

3.) What type of license/permits do I need?

The state of Texas requires all hunters to have a valid Texas hunting license (unless you are ONLY shooting pigs) and a hunter’s education card. If you were born before 9/2/1971 you are considered grandfathered in, and are not required to obtain a hunter education card.  For more information on licensing visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife website at: http://tpwd.texas.gov/business/licenses/online_sales/

4.) Can I bring a guest that doesn’t want to hunt?

Non hunters may join for a $50 per day fee ($150 for the weekend hunt), which covers the expense of their food and lodging.

5.) What if I don’t have a gun?

Please call to discuss, and arrangements can be made.

6.) How can I make a deposit or pay for the hunt?

Checks or money orders can be sent to 13423 Crows Ranch Road, Salado, TX 76571.

7.) Do you have any other dates available or can I just hunt for one day?

Requests for day hunts or additional dates other than what we currently have posted on our website will be considered on a case by case basis. Hog hunts are only scheduled by selected dates in advance.
